Interview with Hair Product (& Bawdy!) Expert Beverly D

Fasten Your seatbelt... Learn how Beverly D took a passion for fine Hair and turned it into a fun and thriving lifestyle...and how you might, too!

Beverly D

Where are you from? Can you tell us a little about yourself and Your background?

I am from Wisconsin, land of beer and cheese and a lot of European fine hair! My background is Polish, German, French... I am predominantly Polish and grew up in a very POLISH Catholic dairy farm environment!

Ha! Know what you mean...I lived in Indiana as a teenager and college student. Lots of fine hair there! Have you always been interested in hair?

I have been told that I did my dolls hair when I was little. I never remembered though. Yes I was into hair, my mom always took me to the Beauty Shop every week to watch and to get my hair done because she disliked doing my fine hair! So by the time I was 10 I was already doing French Twists and updos! I did all kinds of things to my hair and to others. I actually figured out how to cut a shag haircut on my own. I wore go-go tails with those go-go boots, wigs, and cascade hairpieces in grade school. I was quite the fashion plate. So was my mother, I inherited her good taste!

How did you get your start Developing hair care products?

Martin Sage my lifestyle coach told me to get on it in 1999 in Munich, Germany. My clients said I always talked about it but again I never remember saying a word. I was a big avocate of Aveda. I learned so much from Horst Rechelbacher, founder of Aveda, and I was always interested in health and wellness and lived it. So my decision was to make something pure and not harmful. It took 4 chemists from Europe to US but I found the one that produces product from plants — it's 100% ORGANIC, NO KIDDING!

Shampoo is important because everyone needs shampoo. It is important not to be dissolving your hair or adding build up and plastic to your hair with petrochemicals. Anything you can’t pronounce is more than likely a petrochemical. And "Natural" does not mean anything anymore. It has been crucified by the FDA and a company has to only have one natural ingredient in the bottle to call it "natural". Natural means it has no preservatives added. The language is very tricky. That’s why I like hair parties, people get to try before they buy and they get to know me and they can feel the trust and honesty and integrity. Another product that is sensational for dry curly frizzy hair and is the only way to penetrate and recondition and reconstruct on a deep level is my Balancing Treatment Formula. It is the first step in my regimen and it is sensational for hair especially with all the lowfat diets people are on and how they are drying up their systems. Good fats are so essential to hair!

I am a big fan of organic shampoos and conditioners but many people fear they don't work as well. What's your take? And how did you discover the ingredients that work the best?

I heard that so much so when I found my chemist and found how great shampoo can be without that challenge I was estatic. If I ever hear a client has a problem with lather, it is because there is not enough water involved and maybe the hair is really dirty or has a lot of product but mainly I recommend diluting the shampoo to get it to lather and it works. If that still is a problem then we have to consult further into what they do with their hair and maybe diet. Again INSIDE?OUT!

Is there a shelf life to it?

No it’s never stayed on the shelf long enough to get old. Here’s my take on that! I am a handcrafted product and we will never be AVEDA and that’s because I refuse to use synthetics to preserve or to keep from freezing. I am a niche market product company, and support the philosophy of locally grown businesses and producers. My customers quite frankly with short hair only need 2 bottles of shampoo a year, same for the rest of the line. So there is not a lot of waste and not this over consuming and sell more more more philosophy in my business. Have you ever heard of someone telling their customer to dilute the product? No because it would hurt sales. Bad business right. WRONG! I want more customers to use this so we clean up our pollution problems.

Beverly developed this shampoo.

I totally agree! Less really is more, and so important with our Country's current Environmental and Waste Issues.

Can you tell us a bit about how you develop a product?

You employ a chemist if you are not one. Chemistry class was the reason I did not want to become a hairdresser and I resisted it for years even though my talent was hair! I won! I didn’t have to take chemistry. Since I am an artist and know how to work with the fiber of hair I needed to find a chemist who would make something with pure plant materials. I went through 3 chemists before I found the person who spoke the same language! She came up with the initial formulas, but I have to make them work for hair. I find what works and doesn’t. I tweaked the hairspray for colored hair all by myself and it worked! Then it is just listening to the customer and finding out what they want. I am working on a gel presently. Then there is the theme and packaging which I have not even attempted yet. It is all my doing so far. I do not want to spend money on fancy marketing and advertising. I would rather put it into the product and education.

How can my readers try your great products?
